Project 98A. Public Review of the Draft Social and Environmental Policies of the International Finance Corporation
In the Spring of 1998, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank group, requested public comments on its new environment and social policies, review procedures, and its policy on disclosure of information. They hope this framework will improve the environmental and social performance of IFC projects. By establishing a minimal set of "ground-rules" for the social and environmental responsibilities, this framework will define the environmental and human rights of hundreds of thousands of local populations who are affected by IFC projects. The public commentary ended April 17th and the policies are under revision. The KIOSK 98A contains invaluable policy suggests.
Financial intermediaries and lenders seek international harmonization of the social and environmental policies. As is evident in Project 98B, the emerging global policy framework includes cross-referencing of policies with those of the World Bank Group becoming standards of reference. Consequently, public commentaries on Project 98A reach far beyond the confines of the IFC or even the World Bank.
As of early June, the draft IFC policies are now up for consideration by the IFC Board. We will keep everyone posted on new developments on this page.
